Realistic faces

I have been practising on realistic faces too. Now they are with no visible lines. The faces are just shades.

But my actual art targets are different. The next three months perspective and shading. And three to six months hands and folds.

The focus on realistic faces is less mainly because I have only a mobile phone with me. And practising realistic faces is not possible with it. You need a large set-up for getting into realistic portraits. Printers, scanners etc. But I did draw two arbitrary faces. They are just shades and there are no lines.

A final go to an arbitrary face

I have given a final go to an arbitrary face. I have used toned paper(grey paper). 180 gsm paper. I have used white pen. I have used HB and 4B pencils.

I think it is pretty okay except for a few shortcomings in hair, eyes, ears and more. I shall now go for real people portraits in toned paper with white pen and black pencils.

Compounded Factors

Here is a semi-realistic arbitrary face.

There are compounded factors as to why it is not realistic enough.

Drawing ability not high.

74 gsm paper used.

Maybe techniques not there.

Weaknesses.

I need a guru. But actually I am self-guruing.

Basically I like hyperrealistic art. In fact I like it a lot. But whether I can reach there is a question mark.

Let me see.

Village house and rocks

It is so important to know shading techniques and to shade. I realised this only a few weeks back. I was into lines and rubbing pencil over paper and smudging, earlier. It was paint basket on youtube and Sadashiv Sawant who made me realise the importance of shading.
The rock will not look round and the logs of wood will not look cylindrical without proper shading. And the house is cuboidal.
I learnt it the hard way and after considerable searches. My blog readers need not look further. Shading is fundamental. And shading is the brush for pencils.

With smudging art

Here is an art made with smudging. HB and 4B pencils used. White normal A4 paper. Fingers for smudging.

Draw face outline eyebrow outlines, eye outlines and nose bottom and lips outline. Now shade throughout with HB pencil. Except eye whites and highlight area. The shading has to be uniform and straight hatchlines. Now smudge the shadings. Do not smudge on eye whites and highlight. Now take 4B pencil and shade as you would shade a sphere or cylinder the dark areas. Star hatches and semi-star hatches. Then smudge these also. Carefully so as to retain the sphere or cylinder shaded look. That's all.

Without smudging art

Here is an art made without any smudging. All are lines. It is an arbitrary face. To draw a real face and that too without any excesses in shading and also following the right tones is a herculean task. It may take a year to master. Or join Sadashiv Sawant course. Sadashiv Sawant was my book guru I think. I think I have used his books to learn art years ago. But right now I am learning myself. So I will continue to follow my own methods.

Here we go.

Working on drawings

I have been working hard on drawings.

Now my shadings have improved. I will give myself 80 percent marks.

My proportions and relative proportions were always good. So I want to believe. 90 percent marks in proportions.

My planning and rendering an art is good. 70 percent marks.

Perspective is weak. Only 50 percent marks.

These are the marks I give myself. Self-guru-ing you know !!

There are two different drawings I am attaching. One shading. One art planning and rendering.

Shading a sphere

Shading a sphere is very important. It is fundamental. I am sharing my method.

In case you are wondering what is the thing below the sheet of paper

It is indeed a very big journey. Drawing portraits/ caricatures.

It began when I decided to draw the faces of musicians of bollywood music director RDBURMAN. Then I bought the book by Andrew Loomis. I owe a lot to the book. I improved 3d, faces at various angles.

I plan to do figure drawing. Apart from shading, heads, hands etc. This will quench my artistic thirst.

Self portrait

I took a selfie. Made it black and white tonal using editor. And drew a portrait of myself.

Normal A4 white sheet.

6B pencil.

Wavy line and smudging.

I plan to draw portraits and camera drawings this way. Wavy lines and accurate smudging for tonal correctness and equivalence. Remember I am self-guruing.

My aim is to get above average rendering. About 70%.

Let me work this way and see.

Bye for now.

Post-script - If wavy line and smudging work to get hyper-realistic result, then there is nothing quite like it. Reasons being. One it can be taught to kids. Wavy lines gradually can be guided to accuracy. Not possible in straight lines. Second is one has to follow only one technique for both drawing and shading. And the technique of wavy lines. Of course controlled shading is not possible.

I must admit that I do shading practices. Here is a screenshot.

Om Prakash - Bollywood Actor

I would like to write something.

A4 white sheet.

HB pencil.

20 minutes time taken.

There are two laws I want to make public. One is learnt from youtube. And one is mine.

1. Light and shades follow law of cosines. (Youtube)

2. In pencil drawing tonal adjustments follow law of squares.(my statement. Is it correct, sir?)

Ashok Kumar - thespian from Bollywood

You can see that A4 sheet is used.

Size of drawing is A4.

Time taken is 15 minutes.

Today is Chhatt in these parts of India. It is off for me. Chhatt is a community festival.

Chiaroscuro

I was looking at ways to improve resemblance in my drawings. Be it caricatures or portraits.

Then I came across the book "The artist's complete guide to drawing the head" by William L Maughan. I learnt the term chiaroscuro. Leonardo da Vinci followed the principle of chiaroscuro.

Firstly I ordered the book "The artist's complete guide to drawing the head". Then I ordered derwent proportional divider.

The book is available as a free pdf. Still I ordered a hard copy.

There are problems working with white and black. But nevertheless I took the chance to work on chiaroscuro in black and white.

Here are some snapshots.

I applied chiaroscuro and I think the resemblance has improved. Rajendra Kumar and Harry Baweja portraits.

Resemblance is an old concept. Today it is hyper-realism. Nevertheless I want to work on resemblance.

Have a nice day, dear blog readers !!

And of course my obeisances to my guru Da Vinci. For chiaroscuro !!

To Do

I do realize that I need to include background in my cartoons. And I need to be humourous at the same time.
Currently, I draw only once. That is, my drawing cannot have any errors. In other words I do not use my erasers at all. And because I don't use erasers I am unable to take risks and my drawings do not have background.
The solution is a digital drawing pad of course. With this I can erase my previous lines, group of lines, draw built up frames etc. depending on the features of Adobe Photoshop (I think).
My favourite cartoonists are Satish Acharya, Sudhir Tailang and of course Manjul.
