The three things I want

I have used a grey paper here. Trees, human faces and buildings are what I  want to draw.

I want to improve tremendously drawing and shading the above.

I have a kindle book on landscapes by Frank Rines.

I have a hard book on faces by Maughan.

These two are my references.

Raj Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor

My confidence is improving.  This is very important.  I am taking liberty here to try Raj Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor.

A page from ordinary drawing notebook used. Nataraj HB pencil used.

Caricature of Rajinikanth

I am serious when I wrote I shall take up caricatures and shall avoid portraits.

Here is another work in caricature. This time of Rajini Sir.

I shall get into caricatures

Caricatures are different than portraits.  Portraits are accurate. While Caricatures are not. Caricatures are humorous and they too stand alone like portraits.

I shall be concentrating on Caricatures and not portraits.

Here are 3 Caricatures of Shravan Rathod,  Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.

An apple

I wanted to draw a great apple. The paper used for drawing the above apple is a good quality one.

The final frontier

The paper on which we draw is 2 dimensional. But we want to draw 3 dimensional.

There are two aspects we consider:-

1. Parallel line seem to converge .

2. Spheres have ever changing gradience.

Now in Asaro head, John Asaro (died in 2020) did a genius master stroke.  The lines between ears and eyes are almost parallel and he considered spheres of eye ball and nose balls. He made planes of head from these!! Wow!! Possibly the best thing in art in my opinion.

To me John Asaro created hour glass from eye ball  to two chin points. And from nose ball to bottom most chin.

This is the last point I had to write about. Here is wishing a great motivated approach to art. Good wishes!!

Suggestions from self-guru

I think I shall do landscape and portraits seriously and more and more.

My desires are also quenched with the steps.

So these two drawing objectives shall be endeavored.

Not just theory

My posts are not just theory. They are practices too.

Below are drawings made today. Shading, funny cartoons,  portraits and mobile images.

Hope you like them.

So what happens?

Many guys may be confused in art. What happens?

Actually if we talk of light and shades, there is only one point. The light and shades follow law of cosine and is not directly proportional. A point under 90 degrees is fully bright. While at 50 degrees it is dark. One need not be at 0 degrees to be in shade. A 50 degree is shade enough. Because the light and shade follow law of cosine.

Now confusion happens because

1. There may be 2 or more sources of light.

2. A surface may be oily or mirror like causing reflection.

3. Man wants to earn and is greedy. So he makes methods for intricate details. Like using Andrew  Loomis head method etc. to get depth in drawing. Also more knowledge pieces of a subject or art media gives the art an edge.

4. Certain presentations like perspective in art makes things attractive. But then perspective is difficult.

5. While nature is symmetric our writing or art making is not. You involve only one hand and that too two or three fingers including thumb to do art work.

I believe I have an edge in point No.5.  Naturally certain points arise inside me which makes me see the points raised in 5 easily.

Great Art

I was looking at videos in YouTube and I fell in love with tonal shading.  You draw without lines. The picture is just tones. No lines. What is the advantage,  one may ask. Will it fetch us higher marks in drawing exam? Will one earn more money by tonal shading? The answer to these is no.

But the real world around us do not have lines. They are just tones. So by drawing in tones you are trying to represent nature truly. You may not get higher marks or you may not get higher money.  But you are following art more.

In my blog post "A new shading idea" posted two days back I suggested a way to shade without lines. There are precisely 4 steps suggested in my method.  Horizontal,  vertical, angular in straight lines and angular in curved lines. I am sure these steps are apt.

I find it difficult to control my greed in art. I need to master portraits.  I need to master landscapes. Then I need to do funny cartoons.  Then I feel like doing hyper-realistic art. I am interested in colors too. I do not know whether my desires in art will get quenched or not.

But I like making methods.  I believe my new shading idea, sfumato lines for improving drawing, Asaro head method and Action Limbs method of Scott Harris  will help.

Have a nice day.

A new shading idea

The above shading technique will give tones. There will not be any lines. This I think is good. So, if you want only tones and no lines then follow this method.

So, I shall be doing the following three procedures in art.
1. Using the above shading technique.
2. Using the earlier post on Asaro head.
3. Using the action limbs with clothes which was discussed in earlier post.

Given below is a sample I did.

Using Asaro head framework in drawing portraits

Errors now Corrected

Hey guys!! I was making fundamental mistakes in my arbitrary portraits earlier.

I was treating the whole face as a curved shape earlier.  But not anymore.

But still a long way to go. All the techniques.  Then Asaro head. Then resemblance.  Really a hard journey ahead.

Two lifetime plans

Thanks to internet for these two ideas. These have to be practiced and made into a habit.
When it comes to drawings there are so many things to learn. Landscapes or animals or nudes or flowers or portraits or caricatures or funny cartoons or . . . . Then of course whether pencils or charcoal pencils or colored pencils or crayons or oil pastels or watercolor or oil . . . . Man becomes greedy. There is no end to desires.
Compared to drawings electrical engineering is a small field.  Motors and generators or control system or mathematics or faults or transmission or design . . . .
Currently I want to focus on Asaro head and Action packed limbs and clothing in drawings.  In electrical engineering mathematics.

A face with oil pastels

Using the Camel Oil Pastels I have drawn the above face. Blending was learnt yesterday as demonstrated in my blog post Apples. Then I thought let me try it in faces too.

I have used the Grey paper. Not white paper. But grey paper. I have used white oil pastels and 8B pencils too.

Apples

I learnt blending oil pastels from a young chap who had put a video on YouTube.

The lesson was very valuable. The above is the result of my learning.

India has talent in art. The young are too good. Good wishes.

Sonu Sood - Bollywood Star

There was a competition in YouTube by artist Ankit Jasmatiya. I did not participate in the competition because I am an old person. 52 years of age. Moreover I believe in sharing art fundas because I feel I am strong in golden ratio.

Then I thought let me draw Sonu Sood in my blog.

So here it is.
